The Leigh Public Library contains 4,353 volumes and has an average annual circulation of 4,703. Library activities include a summer reading program and two children's programs. Internet access is available to the public at the library.


School District No. 39 in Colfax, Platte and Stanton Counties covers 80.7 square miles. This Class 3, Type K-12 District is accredited by the State of Nebraska.

The new elementary school, with a maximum capacity of 210, was built in 1999. The junior-senior high school was built in 1917 with an addition in 1954 and has a maximum capacity of 210. It is estimated that 98 percent of Leigh's eighth grade students finish high school.

Future school system improvements planned during the next five years include upgrading the computers at the elementary school and adding a Distance Learning Laboratory.

Vocational courses offered at Leigh High School include Vocational Agrigulture, Computer, Business and Consumer Sciences. Internet service is available in the classroom. Evening college courses available in the community include Business, Computer, English and Accounting.

Leigh participates in Educational Service Unit (ESU) No. 7, which is headquartered in Columbus, Nebraska. Services available through the ESU are special education, media, cooperative purchasing, production and laminating.

Local students attend Central Community College - Columbus in Columbus, Nebraska. CCC-Columbus offers both technical/career education programs and an academic transfer program for students who want to earn a bachelor's degree. Central Community College has campuses in Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings.

Health Care

Hospitals utilized by Leigh residents include the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, 25 miles; the Schuyler Memorial Hospital in Schuyler, 27 miles; and the Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, 30 miles. There are two ambulances in Leigh operated by 13 emergency medical technicians and two first responders. The ambulances are equipped with the Jaws of Life, defibrillator and other standard equipment.

Fire Protection

Fire protection is provided in Leigh and the rural area by a 30-member volunteer fire department. Both the fire department and emergency unit are under the direction of the Leigh Fire District.  Leigh has 13 emergency medical technicians and 2 first responders that serve Leigh and the rural area as volunteers.

Law Enforcement

Leigh employs one full-time and two part-time policemen and nine support personnel. Equipment in the department includes fully equipped police car, shotgun, pistol, uniforms, radar eqiupment, finger printing equipment and camera. Leigh is also protected by the Colfax County Sheriff's Department, which staffs 5 sworn officers and 14 support personnel. The department has six patrol cars, county jail facilities, enhanced 911 center, 24-hour communications and other standard equipment. Regular patrol by the police and sheriff's departments provides protection to existing industries.  Leigh law enforcement works closely with the Nebraska State Patrol along with other law enforcement agencies.
